165th Orangeville Fall Fair highlights life during ‘Simpler Times’

By Brian Lockhart

It is a tradition dating back to 1854 when the first Orangeville Fall Fair took place and since then it has been an annual event.

While the fair has taken place at several locations during the early years the current fair has been held at the Orangeville Agricultural Society grounds on 5 Sideroad in Mono since the mid 1990s when the previous site inside Orangeville was sold to developers.

Organized by the Orangeville Agricultural Centre, the three-day event kicked off on Friday, August 31, and ran until Sunday, ending with the popular demolition derby. This year's theme was ‘Simpler Times.'

The Fair features a variety of activities, competitions, entertainment, a classic car show and, of course, the midway.

Demonstrations of antique farm equipment showed what those simpler times were like.

Livestock judging was held in the arena this year, but events featuring horses had to be cancelled as there were concerns over a highly contagious disease that has been going around that's affecting the equine community. That concern has also caused the cancellation of equine events at several other fairs in the region.

While many visitors come to the fair from outside of the region, it is a staple event for many local residents to attend.

The Lockhart family, mom Katie, dad Matthew, and kids Claire, Kristan, and Landon, came to enjoy the sights, the sounds, the events, and the midway.

“We come every year,” Katie said, “I've been coming for a least 10 years. The kids love the animal shows and the horse pulls they usually have an of course the midway.”

The kids really appreciated the pony rides and were looking forward to visiting the head spinning rides at the midway, Katie added.
