Judge to rule on July 29 on whether mother will go to trial for Kaden Young’s drowning

By Paula Brown

A ruling on whether Michelle Hanson will face trial in the death of her son Kaden Young will be made July 29.

A preliminary inquiry was held in an Orangeville courtroom from July 8 to 12 to determine whether there was enough evidence for the case to go to trial. The judge overseeing the hearing set July 29 as the date when a ruling will be made.

A publication ban has been in effect preventing media from reporting on any evidence brought up in the hearing.

Ms. Hanson is facing two charges, impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death. A third charge of dangerous driving causing death was withdrawn by the Crown in May.

Kaden Young died after the minivan driven by Ms. Hanson was pulled into the flooding Grand River on Feb. 21. Ms. Hanson had failed to stop at a road closure sign on the 10th Line of Amaranth. Both managed to escape the vehicle but Kaden was pulled from his mother's arms. His body was later found by two fishermen under a bridge in Belwood Lake on April 21, two months to the day after he disappeared.
