MP David Tilson bids farewell at appreciation evening

After 15 years as the Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, David Tilson will be ending his political career when his current term ends in October.

Mr. Tilson and his constituency team hosted an appreciation event at the Orangeville Agricultural Centre on Thursday, June 13, to thank the residents of the riding for their support of himself and his team during his time as M.P.

“Thank you for joining me and my team tonight to say ‘thank you’ for the years of continued support you’ve given me throughout my time as your Member of Parliament,” Mr. Tilson said. “I’m extremely grateful that my latest role in public service has been the best job I ever had. Being a Member of Parliament has been my dream.”

Mr. Tilson brought members of his constituency team on stage and thanked them for their hard work over the years. 

“Many of you have worked with me on campaign after campaign,” Mr. Tilson said addressing the audience. “My tenure as MP could not have been achieved without teamwork. All these experiences have been an honour and a privilege and it something I have never taken for granted. 

Mr. Tilson has had a long and successful in politics.

He moved to Orangeville in 1970 after obtaining his law degree at Queen’s University.

Mr. Tilson was elected to the Ontario legislature in 1990 and served as a member of the opposition while the New Democrats formed a government.

Elected again in 1995, he moved to the other side of the of the house when the Tories won a majority.

Entering federal politics, he was elected to parliament five times, in the 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015 federal elections.

His most notable victory was in 2011 when he defeated his closest rival by 21,515 votes in an election that had a turnout of 48,736, in the riding.

Mr. Tilson said that once he has retired from the rigors of public life he will look forward to spending more time with family and friends.
