The missing chain

December 6, 2018   ·   0 Comments

One thing for sure is that it couldn’t have happened in some Ontario municipalities.

A check on the Internet Wednesday confirmed that in some area municipalities, it’s virtually inconceivable that the mayor’s chain of office would vanish.

The website of the Township of King puts it this way: “Upon inauguration of a new Mayor for the Township of King, the Chain of Office is symbollically placed around the Mayor’s neck. The Mayor wears the Chain of Office to all Council meetings and ceremonial occasions when appearing in his official capacity, as a mark of pride in the municipality in which we live. The Chain of Office represents the responsibilities, authority and dignity which are attached to the office of the Mayor.”

That’s certainly not the case in Orangeville, where no one at Town Hall seems to recall when former mayor Jeremy Williams last wore it. All we know is that it, and the case enclosing it, is no longer in the Mayor’s Office – and that replacing it will certainly be a costly exercise.
