Search for three-year-old Kaden Young continues along banks of Grand River

Just over three weeks since three-year-old Kaden Young was swept into the Grand River, the search to find his body is continuing.

The OPP rescue team has been actively involved in the search on a daily basis assisted by a dive team, a helicopter, and a drone, but so far the search has been unsuccessful.

“We’re at the mercy of mother nature in terms of some of the ice flows but that doesn’t mean we’re not gong to bring the dive team back and some of the specialty dogs once the conditions improve,” said OPP Constable Paul Nancekivell. “We’re going to search until we find him.”

The search has been aided by hundreds of volunteers who have turned out to comb the banks of the river for any sign of the boy.

A Facebook (Bring Kaden Home) page has been set up to aid in the search and is requesting help from volunteers – especially those who have outdoor experience.

“The task is difficult. The terrain is icy in spots, wet in others, and always changing. Wooded areas are thick with debris from the flooding as well as other obstacles. The river itself is still moving swiftly and is potentially dangerous with shifting ice,” the Facebook page warns.

A base for volunteers has been set up at 9 Mill St. in Waldemar.

Volunteers are requested to sign in at the base location as well as sign-out to ensure no one is accidentally left behind.

Anyone who comes out to volunteer should be prepared with appropriate clothing and tools needed to move ice or debris along the banks of the river and be ready for some difficult terrain.

Volunteers should exercise a high level of caution during a search and not venture out onto ice or into the river.
