Orangeville Labour Council hosts health and safety dinner

By Jasen Obermeyer

Orangeville and District Labour Council (ODLC) hosted their 12th annual health and safety dinner last Friday, recognizing individuals promoting and striving for safer working conditions.

The dinner took place at Orangeville's Best Western Plus. Over 60 people attended the event, and according to Primrose Short, president of ODLC, it was one of their most successful dinners.

The keynote speaker was Warren Thomas, president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), while Councillor Don Kidd represented the Town of Orangeville.

Two awards were given out. The recipient of the Health and Safety Volunteer Activists Award was Tracey Mackie Vlietstra with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation. The recipient for the Day of Mourning Poster contest grade 7 and 8 was Chandra Philips, a grade seven student from Princess Margaret Public School.

Ms. Short says the dinner is very important for ODLC because it's their main event. “It reaches out to the community that it is important to be able to go to work knowing [workers] have a right to arrive home safe at the end of the day.”

She says it is very important to also recognize those who volunteer their time to the Joint Health and Safety Committee, educating not only themselves, but also their coworkers.
